Biography
Benefitting from the eclectic musical tastes of his parents, as a youth Chris DuBrock fell in love with quality music from a variety of genres ranging from the classic scores of John Williams and Carl Stalling to the music of Bach, Prokofiev, Charlie Parker and the Beatles. He began playing music professionally while in high school, performing on trumpet in the local jazz clubs of his hometown, Anchorage, Alaska, and playing extra trumpet parts in the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. DuBrock studied trumpet and arranging at the Eastman summer program for high school students and then moved to the East Coast to pursue further studies at Rutgers University, where he studied trumpet with William Fielder, jazz with Kenny Barron and Ralph Bowen and classical composition with Noel DaCosta and Gerald Chenoweth. In 2001 DuBrock completed a Ph.D. at Rutgers with a dissertation that explores aspects of stylistic juxtaposition and postmodernism in works of Bach, Stravinsky, Berg and Ives and applies these principles to an original piece for chorus and orchestra.
Upon graduation, DuBrock was able to find an outlet for his wide-ranging musical passions by co-founding a film music production company, Cinema SoundWorks (cinemasoundworks.com), with songwriter / composer / sound designer Anthony Scalzo. Among other projects, Cinema SoundWorks has scored the award winning maritime doc First Light: The Montauk Lighthouse (Third Wave Films).
DuBrock has also worked on several film and television projects as a freelance composer / orchestrator, including the original score for two episodes of the anime TV pilot Nine Tails Fox (Bang Music). His concert music has been performed at the Sitka Chamber Music Festival and is currently published by Art of Sound Music (artofsoundmusic.com). As a trumpeter he has played and / or recorded with the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Pinetop Perkins, The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, The Infernos and The Max Graham Band.
